Community Outreach
Mentoring Next-Generation Scientists
ESSL Scientists participate in mentoring students of all ages, via institutional programs such as SOARS, at the graduate and PhD level by acting as Masters and PhD advisors, by hosting post-graduate scientific visitors who participate in research projects, by acting as mentors to early career scientists, and sometimes by showing up in a K - 12 classroom for a hands-on demonstration or lecture. Some of the more formal programs that ESSL scientists participate in are highlighted, below.
SOARS
SOARS, Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science, is an undergraduate-to-graduate bridge program designed to broaden participation in the atmospheric and related sciences. The program is equal parts research internship, learning community, and mentoring program. SOARS offers comprehensive financial support for summer research and graduate school for up to four years. Post-graduate Scientists
ASP's postdoctoral program provides an opportunity for recent-Ph.D. scientists to continue to pursue their research interests in atmospheric and related science. The program also invites postdoctorates from a variety of disciplines to apply their training to research in the atmospheric sciences. Visit the ASP website.
Mentoring Early-Career Scientists
The NCAR Early Career Scientist Assembly (ECSA) provides a forum to discuss career development topics and to host scientific leaders in the atmospheric sciences. The ECSA is a subsection of the NCAR Scientist Assembly and is composed of Scientists I/II, Project Scientists I/II, Associate Scientists, and Postdoctoral Scientists. We have representation at the executive committee of the NCAR Scientist Assembly, so we can help guide actions taken by NCAR scientists as a group. Visit the ASP/Early Career Scientist website.
Visitors Programs
ESSL's divisions and institute each have long-standing visitors programs that often bring in post docs and early career scientists from around the world for collaborative research projects and mentoring opportunities.
