ESSL's Mission
To perform fundamental studies of the dynamics of the Earth and Sun Systems, across spatial and temporal scales, and to assess how natural forcing (e.g. solar variability), and human-driven perturbations (e.g. chemical emissions, land-use changes) affect the evolution of the Earth system and ultimately the habitability of our planet.
About ESSL
The Earth & Sun Systems Laboratory is one of 5 laboratories

at NCAR, and was formed in 2004 to promote and facilitate the solar and atmospheric research areas within NCAR.
Research within ESSL is highly collaborative, with specialties focussed in four major research divisions

, and one institute which administers collaborative projects.
The Atmospheric Chemistry Division
ACD explores the impact of chemistry on climate and air quality. Visit the ACD Website to learn more.
The Climate & Global Dynamics Division
CGD research provides understanding of the Earth's climate system and uses models to develop the capability of predicting the evolution of the climate system to the highest degree possible. Visit the CGD Website to learn more.
The High Altitude Observatory
HAO explores the Sun and its effects on the Earth's atmosphere and physical environment. Visit the HAO Website to learn more.
The Mesoscale & Microscale Meteorology Division
MMM seeks to further understanding of some of the most important and fundamental scientific questions in meteorology, with an emphases on understanding and forecasting weather, and on weather's relationship to climate. Visit the MMM Website to learn more.
The Institute for Integrative and Multidisciplinary Earth Studies
TIIMES facilitates research efforts that span atmospheric science sub-disciplines and a broader spectrum of the geosciences. Visit the TIIMES Website to learn more.
