Stratosphere-Troposphere Analyses of Regional Transport (START-05)

The goals of the UTLS Initiative are to plan and conduct field campaigns, using this NCAR-NSF Gulfstream V aircraft, to investigate the coupled dynamical, chemical and microphysical processes in the UTLS and to complement the aircraft studies with satellite observations and multiscale NCAR models.

 

Terrain-Induced Rotor Experiment (T-REX)

The Terrain-induced Rotor Experiment (T-REX) was a coordinated effort to explore the structure and evolution of atmospheric rotors.  The main scientific objective of T-REX is a comprehensive study of the coupled mountain-wave, rotor, and boundary-layer system.  T-REX field activities took place in Owens Valley in March and April 2006.  Data reduction is ongoing.

 

Stratosphere-Troposphere Analyses of Regional Transport (START-08)

PI: Elliot Atlas (Univ. of Miami), Ken Bowman (Texas A&M), Laura Pan

Stratosphere-Troposphere Analyses of Regional Transport (START-08) and HIAPER Pole-to-Pole Observations (HIPPO) of Carbon Cycle and Greenhouse Gases experiment will have a joint payload and operation in Spring 2008. During this workshop, the investigators will provide an overview of the scientific issues the experiments planned to address. Related modeling and satellite data analyses will be discussed. Planning for forecast and flight operations will also be part of the workshop. We invite the community’s participation and scientific involvement in the project.

 

Deep Convective Clouds & Chemistry Experiment (DC3)

PIs: Mary Barth, William Brune (PSU), Chris Cantrell, Steven Rutledge (CSU)

The DC3 Field Experiment will characterize the effect of midlatitude, continental convection on the transport and transformation of ozone and its precursors. Along with measurements of hydrogen oxide radicals, their precursors, and nitrogen oxides in both the inflow and outflow regions of deep convection, measurements of cloud microphysical properties, storm kinematics, and lightning discharges will be conducted. These measurements are planned for the central United States during summer 2010 where remote continental regions can be contrasted to anthropogenically-influenced regions.

 

Satellite Analysis (website)

Several ongoing projects use satellite data to provide a global picture and context for more detailed balloon and in-situ aircraft observations. Satellite data are the crucial global complement to global modeling efforts, which are necessary for advancing our forecast skill for climate and atmospheric chemistry.

 

Multi Scale Modeling of the UTLS Region (website)

Several efforts are currently underway on modeling the UTLS region at various scales. These efforts focus on a variety of topics currently being conducted in various divisions of NCAR: UTLS Chemistry, Ice Cloud Microphysics, Aerosol Indirect Effects, UT Water Vapor Feedbacks, South Asian Monsoon Impacts on the UTLS
