Annual global carbon dioxide concentration
(23 February 2007)

My research concerns the global carbon cycle, particularly in the ocean and how the oceanic carbon cycle couples to the terrestrial carbon cycle via concentrations of atmospheric of CO2. My research is conducted with global coupled climate models that have parameterizations of biogeochemical cycles incorporated into them. My work is done primarily with other members of the Biogeochemistry Working Group of CCSM, of which I am the community liaison.

In the last fiscal year, Oct. 2006 - Sep. 2007, we have performed extensive experiments with the BEC oceanic ecosystem model (Moore, Doney and Lindsay, GBC, 2004) and the terrestrial carbon-nitrogen model of Peter Thornton in the fully coupled CCSM3 model in its low resolution configuration (~3 degree for the ocean, T31 for the atmosphere). Feedbacks between biogeochemistry and climate are being analyzed and compared to previous studies and observational constraints.

In the near future, we plan to initiate spinup runs of the above biogeochemical parameterizations in configuration of CCSM that uses higher resolution, ~1 degree for the ocean, ~2x2.5 degree for the atmosphere, and more recent physical parameterizations. These runs are being performed in anticipation of incorporating a prognostic biogeochemical package into CCSM4, the construction of which will begin in the next fiscal year.
