BGS

BGS

The overarching Biogeosciences (BGS) goal is to model the biogeochemical cycles within the Earth system consistent with analyses of observations.  This synergy between observations and models to understand and integrate biogeochemical cycles across scales is a core value of the BGS program and the broader NCAR effort.

Recent successes associated with coupled carbon-climate simulations and the Carbon in the Mountains Experiment, have led to improved understanding of carbon exchange, including exchanges and mesoscale transport in complex terrain.

A modeling framework has been developed to achieve improved representation of ecological disturbance and the carbon and nitrogen cycles were successfully coupled as part of intercomparison studies.

Major advances were achieved in understanding the global carbon budget based on a clearer understanding of how boundary layer dynamics influence carbon exchange.

Inter-regional North American and European nitrogen deposition budgets were quantified for the first time.
